How to Talk About Sexual and Reproductive Health So People Listen
Every message is framed. Whether it’s a hashtag, headline, or conversation with a friend, our words can either reinforce stigma—or spark solidarity.
Opponents of reproductive freedom have mastered the language of fear and control. But we have something stronger: truth, lived experience, and a global movement rooted in care and dignity.
That’s why we launched #WordsToWin—a global campaign to reframe how we talk about abortion care, sexual and reproductive rights, gender-based violence, sex work, and more.
Frame abortion as care.
Say “abortion care,” not “abortion services.” Reaffirm that abortion is essential healthcare.
Lead with values.
Center freedom, autonomy, and dignity. Emphasize the right to make decisions about one’s body and future.
Ground messages in human rights.
Use personal, powerful framing like: “My Life. My Freedom. My Decision. My Abortion.”
Speak clearly about harm.
Avoid language that obscures or minimizes. Use direct terms: rape, violence, coercion, forced pregnancy.
Normalize and affirm.
Abortion is not shameful. It’s moral, just, and necessary. Say it: “We will not be silenced, shamed, or denied our rights.”
Globalize the movement.
Reproductive rights are under coordinated attack worldwide. Use language of cross-border solidarity.
